Sofi Martinez Lozoya

First-Year Counselor

Hey Silliman Class of 2030! My name is Sofi (she/her), and I am from Ypsilanti, Michigan, just outside of Ann Arbor. I am a first-generation immigrant from Mexico, majoring in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration in Biomechanics. At Yale, I am on the leadership board for the Society of Women Engineers (Yale SWE), where I lead STEM education outreach initiatives for students in the New Haven area, and I work as a Spanish Language Tutor. I also conduct research at the Yale Computational Biomechanics lab, where I am currently developing a computational heart model to investigate how thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair impacts spinal cord perfusion.

During my time at Yale, I have been deeply involved with affinity groups, leading Sillitinxs (Silliman’s very own Latinx affinity group), and dancing for Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Yale (BFMdY). I also had a brief stint baking for the Acorn, back in the day when we had a functioning bakery!

Outside of classes, you can catch me sipping on a caramel oat latte at the Acorn, and baking cakes for my friends’ birthdays in the Silliman kitchen (let me know what baked goods you like, maybe I can bake you something for special occasions *wink* ). If you see me around, please say hi! I can’t wait to be your FroCo, and I am so excited to share this beautiful community with you! Welcome home, Class of 2030!
